Who still owns an iPod Shuffle? What about a phone booth? There are too many obsolete technologies to count.

We were interested in why some technologies are forgotten as soon as they are replaced, while others stay with us. Record players, no doubt, have been replaced by Bluetooth and audio streaming services, like Spotify.

Invented in the late 19th century, record players and vinyls experienced a sharp decline in the 1980s due to the rise of compacti discs and the growing popularity of cassettes. So why have they lingered their way back into the mainstream? Why are stores like Urban Outfitters choosing to carry them again? Why are Gen Zers collecting records?

We explore these questions by walking into a record store to study the undying interest in these devices through the perspective a long-time record store owner…

So that’s it then? Perhaps not all machine’s fates are at the mercy of our ever-evolving technological world. Perhaps some are, instead, irreplaceably secure because a feeling that they haven’t ceased to share with us.
